Growers are also keen on reducing CO emissions by 30 per cent by 2020, compared with 1990 levels. This was one of the findings of a survey by the Productschap Tuinbouw (Product Board for Horticulture).
“Strong support is crucial because individual entrepreneurs have a great influence on whether or not targets are met,” notes the Productschap Tuinbouw.
The survey shows that 45 per cent of potted plant growers and 37 per cent of flower growers will be investing in energy conservation measures or sustainable energy initiatives within the next two years. Three-quarters of these measures will be intended for use in existing greenhouses.
Most of the attention is focused on co-generation systems, which growers can use to supply energy to the public grid. Although new technologies, such as geothermal energy and bio-fuels, do not yet figure largely on investment schedules, they are beginning to draw more attention.
