May 7, 2008, Hamilton, Ont. — The explosive growth and urbanization of the Chinese economy has created opportunities in Canada in the field of agriculture and food production. China not only offers a huge potential market for Canadian agri-foods, but also has opportunities in the areas of agriculture education, research, development, production and agriculturally related life science events. Cultural, language and regulatory differences have been major limitations in this exchange and co-operation.
 The Canada–China Agriculture and Food Development Exchange Centre Inc. (CCAgr) was founded upon these principles. Youming Zhao (pictured), a professional agrologist and a former greenhouse grower in Canada, is the founder. He has built many contacts in the Canadian and Chinese agricultural industries through more than 20 years of work experience in both countries.
The CCAgr has the support of many Canadian and Chinese agriculture professionals, university professors, senior government officers, and entrepreneurs. The CCAgr utilizes culture, language and technical skills, in combination with Canadian industry knowledge by Canadian professionals, to bridge this gap. The time is ripe for more agriculturally based co-operation and exchange opportunities between Canada and China, as China’s economy is expanding and Canada is looking for new markets.
The CCAgr is acting as a bridge between Canada and China in the flower, organic vegetable, and greenhouse horticulture industries, which are fast growing agricultural sectors in China. It is working to bring some Chinese greenhouse companies to this year’s Canadian Greenhouse Conference in Toronto. It is also encouraging Canadian companies to attend the International Plant Exhibition (flowers and vegetables) on Dec. 1-3, 2008, in Guang Dong. It is one of the largest plant shows in China.
