Feb. 22, 2008, Leamington, Ont. — Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) are the first group of growers to regulate food safety in their industry.
Growers in the province have led a grower-driven food safety program since 1998. In 2007, it became mandatory that all Ontario greenhouse vegetable growers, packers and marketers have annual third-party audits to ensure they are following important food safety standards. If they don’t pass, they won’t be licensed to grow, pack or market Ontario greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers and sweet peppers.
With current media and public attention on food safety, it is important to note that Ontario greenhouse vegetable growers have set of the highest food safety standards in North America. This is not a government requirement, but rather a grower-driven regulation.
