Cool New Stuff Trial to debut

The “What’s New – Cool New Stuff Trial” is about to make its debut in and around the Niagara region of Ontario. This completely free event, being held Aug. 9-10, is sponsored by the Canadian Ornamental Plant Foundation, Greenhouse Grower and Greenhouse Canada. It’s a collection of field and greenhouse open houses previewing “what’s new” for 2008. About a dozen locations are taking part this year.

COPF board member Laurie Scullin says that while this year’s inaugural event will be small scale, the project has enormous growth potential. It’s quite probable the event could soon grow to host thousands of growers from across Canada and through much of the U.S. “Our goal,” notes Scullin, “is to connect thousands of growers with the latest new genetics from vegetative and seed plant breeders.”

The host sites are located within about 100 kilometres of each other, and are about an hour’s drive from either the Toronto or Buffalo airports. One advantage the Toronto/Niagara showcase has going for it, compared with the California Pack Trials, is better timing. Having the event in mid- August, when things are a little more relaxed for growers, is a big plus. Driving distances will be minimal.

COPF is welcoming the opportunity to better connect growers and breeders. Updated information is being posted on the COPF website (www.copf.org). COPF is a not-for-profit organization assisting breeders in bringing new products to market. Checking out “what’s new” has gotten a lot easier – and convenient – for growers.
