N.S. picnics to promote "buy local" campaign
July 28, 2008, Halifax — The Nova
Scotia government is pushing the concept of “buy local” to encourage
consumers to support the province’s farmers. It is launching a Select
Nova Scotia campaign that will include province-wide picnics during
August featuring locally grown foods.
CHC launches On-Farm Certification Program
July 25, 2008, Ottawa — The
Canadian Horticultural Council (CHC) has launched its On-Farm Food
Safety (OFFS) Certification Program. Complete information for
producers, storage intermediaries and packers interested in enrolling
in the Program is available on the CHC website.

Sailing the seven seas with SUNSET support

— While most North American teenagers are dreaming about baseball and video games,
16-year-old Zac Sunderland recently set sail to attempt to
become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe alone. Over the
next 12 to 14 months, Sunderland will travel more than 65,000
kilometres on his own, diverting to port only 12 times to replenish
supplies, which will include a popular line of greenhouse vegetables.

July 15, 2008, Guelph, Ont. — The Pest Management Regulatory Agency
(PMRA) recently announced the approval of a minor use label expansion
for BIOPROTEC 3P Biological Insecticide for control of Duponchelia
fovealis on greenhouse ornamentals, greenhouse herbs and greenhouse
vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers for fruit or transplant
production) in Canada.
More funding for floriculture research

North American Greenhouse/Hothouse Vegetable Growers (NAGHVG), an
association formed after three years of research and review to protect
and support superior standards of excellence in food safety and
quality, has developed its own certification standards. The NAGHVG was
founded by five leading North American greenhouse growers.
