Perennials in blooms in time for Olympics

A spectacular planting of Helleborus Vancouver Medallion was unveiled at historic Prospect Point in Stanley Park on February 9. The plants were donated to the City by The Garden Club of Vancouver.

The idea to feature a perennial in bloom in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics belongs to The Garden Club of Vancouver. Conceived several years ago, the intention was to showcase the great climate that Vancouver enjoys. Very few cities can boast of being host to the Winter Games while at the same time enjoying early flowers in the garden.

Terri Clark of The Garden Club of Vancouver suggested a Hellebore variety would be suitable, and John Schroeder of Heritage Perennials was pleased to select and name Vancouver Medallion. This is a robust and very floriferous variety bred in Belgium at the nursery Het Wilgenbroek, and introduced as the cultivar 'Candy Love.'

The high profile planting at Stanley Park consists of 750 plants, arranged in stylized curves to match ski runs and snow on the North Shore mountains. There may not be snow on the ground, but these drifts of flowers create a bright vista.
